Kingdom Heights
STRUCTURED CABLING PROJECT
We were thrilled to be asked by the Rock, a client for over 10 years, to help them turn the 2nd floor of their facility into a fully operational K-12 private Christian school capable of supporting over 300 students. And do it in 8 months.
Their building had an educational history – having originally helped repurpose the former Butler High School campus as a church, we were asked to help develop their IT needs from the ground up for this new initiative. While the first floor of this 230,000 sqft facility fully served the needs of the church at large, many areas of the 2nd floor remained untouched since its purchase from Huntsville City Schools. We worked closely with The Rock’s Administrators to bring their vision to life.
Project Scope
While several sections of the building were not being actively used, many rooms were, including a pre-existing Academy on campus; the initial challenge was to maintain uptime for the facility – security, cameras, and network coverage while performing demolition of outdated network cabling and hardware, many components dating all the way back to Butler High School’s use. Project management was self-performed by the Client, so there was no General Contractor directly overseeing coordination between trades.
We were involved in ground-floor planning from several aspects, which included many challenges:
- Ensure adequate network coverage for new classrooms
- Design network infrastructure for growth
- Incorporate flexibility into the facility and classrooms – we were tasked with designing the network infrastructure simultaneously as the school administration was finalizing classroom layouts and needs
- Plan for a full facility that will support 12 grades at maximum building capacity
- Stay within the client’s budget as a brand-new school
- Networking - Cabling, Infrastructure, WiFi
- Fiber, Copper installation
- Door Access
- Cameras
Finished Result
With a total of 84 classrooms to provide network services for, the school was divided into 8 Pods, with four supporting IDFs and an MDF. A redundant fiber backbone was installed, connecting each IDF as well as each Pod, and including other areas of the building designated for future student activities like Fine Arts, Theatre, and Band.
Each classroom’s network is supported by a designated WiFi access point, as well as future capability for hardwired devices. Other supported classroom infrastructure includes security/alarm notification devices, VoIP phones, wired network display clocks, and intercoms, which were installed by our team.
